<div class="post-body

The annual Joy House Film Festival is on again at Hoyts, celebrating short films of JOY and DIVERSITY.

The Joy House Film Festival was founded 5 years ago and was inspired by a remark a friend in the industry had made saying there’s not enough film festivals that left people feeling uplifted afterwards. She had just attended a film festival that was diverse in content but left her feeling disturbed. Being a filmmaker myself, I thought why not pay it forward and spread this sense of community and start my own film festival, one that is positive, uplifting and with diversity – so it reflects society how it stands today.

This year, Joy House Film Festival was asked to be partners with New York’s World Film Fair!

“It’s great that World Film Fair approached us because that means our top 10 short films will be shown internationally and our message of joy and diversity will be shared – globally. Already from its conception we’ve seen an increase in diversity content in films, a jump from 10 to 50-60% in a matter of 5 years. It’s exciting to be part of this diversity movement.” Says founder and NSW elected MEAA’s (Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance’s Diversity representative), Joy Hopwood.

Films selected include: Any Help Will Help (comedy US), Munchies (Australian stop motion animation), Digby Webster Doco about a successful artist with a disability (Australia), Creed (Australian Youth film) about a Muslim boy who has a passion for soccer, Good For One Free Hug (US), Reflector of Living Will (Foreign Film), That’s Life (Australian Rom Com), First Impressions (Australian Doco), Give me a minute (Australian Comedy), Joy and Herron (animation).

“Life’s too short for me to wait and see the change in the industry, so why not make the change,” says Joy Hopwood. “After the success of Crazy Rich Asians,” there’s definitely public demand for more diversity driven films to be made.”

Joy House Film Festival gives out awards for not only best film, but best DIVERSITY film, best Youth Film, Hoyts People’s Choice Awards, Best Women’s Film. We’re supported by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance’s Diversity committee.

The judges for this year’s festival includes writer/ screenwriter- Benjamin Law and writer/ screenwriter Alice Pung and the local mayor.

Joy House Film Festival

Sunday Sept 9th Hoyts Mandarin Centre

4.30-6pm

cnr of Albert and Victor St,

Chatswood.
<p class=" post-main="" <div="" "="">
