<p>Recording artist Travis Scott has just appeared on <em>The Ellen Show</em> to talk a little bit more about how it feels to be a first-time parent with girlfriend target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener noreferrer Kylie Jenner&nbsp;– and promote his album <em>Astroworld</em>.</p>

<p>Travis – who arrived on Ellen’s famous couch with the gift of a pair of target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener noreferrer Nike Air Force 1s&nbsp;he’d collaborated on – was utterly down to earth and adorable in the segment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He giggled, took a shot and joked along with Ellen&nbsp;about the very active Stormi’s “workout plan.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Travis&nbsp;also revealed that being present for baby Stormi’s birth was a steep learning curve, that he tried to take an active role and that his mother-in-law Kris Jenner aka Mama KJ was a godsend during this transformative experience.</p>
<p>“It was so scary,” Travis told Ellen. “This is actually my first delivery room. [Kris is]&nbsp;walking me through this whole process&nbsp;…&nbsp;There’s this thing called the placenta that I’ve just been hearing about. Oh my God. So I was fearful of that.”</p>
<p>“I cut the umbilical cord,” he said proudly. “And she held it down, mama K.J. She’s the best, man.”</p>
<p>Prodded for more info by Ellen, Travis noted&nbsp;that the placenta is “very, very crazy”.</p>

<p>Travis said he never thought parenting&nbsp;was going to be plain sailing, but that things fell into place once he clapped eyes on his little girl.</p>
<p>“Going into it, I was nervous and scared. You know, we were both young,” he told Ellen. “When you first had a baby in your arms, it’s uncontrollable.”</p>

<p>I am a writer who often has a <em>really </em>hard time getting things down in words. This gets particularly bad when the thing I’m trying to write about is:</p>
<ol>
<li>A) a malleable topic that can go in a million directions</li>
<li>B) is really important to me, or</li>
<li><strong>C) both of the above</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>Writing about children’s literature/my MPhil experience is certainly a category C. Oh, the places [we] could go, and oh, the possibilities we could explore! For me, when words fail to flow, my pen begins to doodle. When I applied for the MPhil, I first “doodle-stormed” the topics that I thought I wanted to study:</p>

<p>K was tracing the paintings with an index finger, and murmuring. Leaning closer, I realized that he was hunting for a translation that he recognized within the character itself. “I found it!” he said triumphantly at one point, pointing to the painting of “十” … and then to the “ten” and “dix” (English and French translations of “十”) that were hidden in the character:</p>

<p>Importantly, the rainbow-stroke order guide was a significant and new contribution to the text, that began first as a <em>design</em> initiated by K. Both K and I participated in the <em>negotiation</em> of the idea and – having arrived at a mutually agreed upon conclusion – K completed the&nbsp;<em>production</em> of the design prototype. The interactions between child and adult co-author in this example also further illuminate the “sliding scale” of adult and child agency. Rather than a flat relationship in which a child gains power while the adult loses it, K and I were engaged in a process which Nick Sousanis calls “unflattening” – a process in which multiple vantage points are engaged to engender “new ways of seeing” (2015, p. 32).</p>
<p><strong>Intergenerational Co-authorship: What is Fair?</strong></p>
<p>My experiences working with K taught me something important: that children can make meaningful contributions to the creation of a children’s text when invited into the process of authorship. It also reminded me that it’s easy to cut children out of the final step of authorship: recognition and compensation for their work. <p>I am surrounded by sensory processing resources and education all the time. I tend to forget that others may not understand many of the terms related to sensory processing&nbsp;behaviors or sensory processing disorder. I recently saw a conversation on Facebook between some acquaintances that prompted me to address some common misconceptions when it comes to sensory processing. So today we are going to look at <strong>sensory avoiding vs. sensory seeking behaviors</strong>.</p>

<p>There are a few terms we need to dissect before we can begin to understand what sensory avoiding or sensory seeking behaviors can look like. You will see these terms referred to in a few different ways depending on what book you read, so I am including all the common phrases to describe each.</p>
<p><strong>SENSORY AVOIDING</strong></p>
<p>You will see sensory avoiding referred to as a few different things: hyper-responsive, over-responsive or hypersensitivity.&nbsp; Children with sensory avoiding behaviors are excessively responsive to sensory input. The slightest movement, touch, or sound could send you or a child into a negative behavior response. They will often avoid certain&nbsp;sensations, sounds, or environments because of this heightened awareness and response.</p>
<p><strong>SENSORY SEEKING</strong></p>
<p>You will see sensory seeking referred to as hypo-responsive or hyposensitivity.&nbsp; This means a&nbsp;child does not receive enough sensory input and is constantly looking for or “seeking” it to get to that “just-right” level of arousal. These behaviors can impact their day because they are not able to focus or attend to a task until they are at that just-right level.</p>
<p><strong>UNDER-RESPONSIVE</strong></p>
<p>There is a third category that can be overlooked and may seem similar to sensory avoiding, but it is very different. Children with an under-responsive sensory system exhibit a diminished response to sensory input. More sensory input is needed than average in order to get a response. They can look like they are “lazy” or “tired” and just don't pay attention to their surroundings.</p>

<h3>Common Misconceptions with Sensory Avoidings vs. Sensory Seeking</h3>
<p>A common misconception is that if a child is a sensory avoider in a few areas of sensory processing that they will avoid all types of sensory input. This is simply not true. A child could avoid auditory or tactile input (sounds and touch) but could crave vestibular input (the sense of balance). And they could even avoid or crave different activities within the same sensory system.</p>
<p>What could this look like? You may have a child who can't stand tags on their clothing or the seems in their socks or shirts (part of the tactile system). But they may crave a tight fitting shirt or need to wear a weighted vest or a lycra body sock for different situations (this is tactile and proprioceptive input).</p>
<p>You may have a child who loves to spin or hang upside down but is afraid of heights (this is all part of the vestibular system).</p>
<p><strong>A child may also have sensory seeking behaviors with one sensory system or avoiding behaviors or under-responsive behaviors with a different one.&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>It important to address a child's sensory avoiding, sensory seeking, and under-responsive behaviors when we are looking at sensory processing. All three can play a part in helping them to learn strategies and self-regulation tools to get through their day.</p>

The schoolyard of Paris’s Avenue Daumesnil &Eacute;cole Maternelle doesn’t look like the site of a revolution: It’s the modest play space of a state-run kindergarten.
<p>But look closer. The yard has just been subtly remodeled to make it better able to tolerate a hotter, wetter world. Over the summer break, its conventional impermeable concrete surfaces were ripped up and replaced with a porous sub-layer that can act as a sponge for stormwater. Over this base went a layer of fully permeable pavement that allows water to drain through, minimizing the risk of flooding.

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? - 13 Nov 2018 02:07

<p>I found a fun series by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee called <em>Bink &amp; Gollie</em>. This is a really cute series. Bink and Gollie are the best of friends. It seems to me that Gollie is the babysitter, but I could be wrong. At times it seems like Bink is pestering Gollie but they always seem to have fun adventures together. I think my favorite story was <em>Give a Fish a Home</em>. Bink buys a goldfish to be his “marvelous companion” and Gollie seems to get jealous because Bink brings his fish, called Fred, everywhere with him. They take Fred roller skating, but Bink trips, and drops the fishbowl with Fred in it. Gollie grabs him and puts him in the pond nearby to save his life. Bink learns that Gollie is actually his marvelous companion decides visits to the pond will work just fine.</p>

<p>I absolutely love Kate DiCamillo and so far I’ve enjoyed every book of hers that I’ve read. The main thing that makes her writing so unique is her use of vocabulary. These books are great for 1<sup>st</sup> grade, but because of the wide range of vocabulary there are a lot of words that they’ll need help with. Some examples are: Greetings, bonanza, compromise, outrageous, unwillingness, implore ventured, extraordinary, marvelous, companions… But why not teach kids these amazing words!</p>

Sutherland<em>. </em>My boys absolutely love this book. They have been listening to it intently every night. After each chapter they say, “please don’t stop, that’s a good cliff hanger!” Honestly I had a hard time putting the book down. The story is about a prophecy of five dragonets (young dragons) who are prophesied to end the long horrible war in the world of dragons. The young dragons are kept underground away from danger so they can fulfill their destiny. However, one of the five was never supposed to be in the group. She was simply a last minute substitute. When the prophet finally visits the underground caves and finds out the mistake, he orders that she be killed. Her four friends plan an escape from the cave but disaster strikes. In the outside world they run into the one of the dragon queens who want them dead…</p>
<p>I plan to finish the book this week!</p>
